Women and Child Rights activist Auda Viegas has called off her indefinite hunger strike scheduled from Thursday, saying the Goa Police has accepted her demand for a bigger space for the women police station and anti-human trafficking unit.
The decision to call off the hunger strike from Thursday was taken after the district police chief, SP Arvind Gawas invited the women’s right activist for discussion at the district police headquarters on Wednesday evening.
After the meeting, Auda told The Goan that she has decided to call off her planned hunger strike after the district police chief agreed to her demand for bigger space for the women police station.
As an immediate step, she said the district police chief has agreed to shift the women police station from the existing premises to the space occupied by the home guards. “I have agreed to this proposal since the home guard space is much bigger from the existing premises, which is admeasuring around 33 square metres,” she said.
Auda, however, said that she has asked the district police to look out for spacious premises to house the women police station at the district police headquarters, saying the Old Collectorate building may not be the right choice to house a women police station.
The activist had threatened to go on an indefinite hunger strike in front of the Margao police station to protest against the department’s failure to allocate spacious space for the women police station.
