MARGAO
Social activists cried foul as mobile toilets surfaced on the pedestrian footpath at the ongoing feast fair at Old Market here on Tuesday.
When the couple of mobile toilets made their presence felt on the footpath on Tuesday morning, activists questioned whether it is prudent to keep the toilets right on the footpath. Apart from blocking the footpath, a question was raised whether any person will use the mobile toilet when people keep moving on the footpath.
Activist Judith Almeida demanded to know whether the Margao Municipal sanitary section had approved the footpath as the location to station the mobile toilets.
Even officials in the know pointed out that the High Court had issued directions to shift the feast fair away from the footpaths in the past to ensure free movement of the pedestrians. "I was shocked and surprised when I saw the mobile toilets stationed right on the footpath," she added.
While outsourcing the contract to allot stalls for the hawkers and vendors during the seven day feast fair, the Margao Municipal Council had made it mandatory for the contractor to arrange mobile toilets for the benefit for the hawkers as well as the visitors visiting the fair.
