Activists and locals under the banner of Goenkars Against Marina (GAM) gathered at the Bambolim beach on Monday to oppose the construction of retaining wall on the beach by a starred hotel which they claim involves various irregularities.
Apart from that, it was also decided to oppose the proposed revival of the Nauxim marina project as well as the approval of the Mormugao Port Authority.
Speaking at the meeting, activist and AAP leader Ramrao Wagh informed that the main focus of the meet is to oppose the construction of the retaining wall by the starred hotel which is done by encroaching on the beach.
“There is irregularity in the construction of the wall as there is an encroachment of over three metres into the beach area,” Wagh said.
GAM Convenor Adv Suresh Palkar said hotel is trying to reclaim the beach area and claim it as their own.
“There are also doubts raised on the panchayat license issued as it was done without conducting an inspection,” alleged Palkar, while stating that the construction is also happening on the high tide line, which is not allowed.
“Further, if there is an issue of soil erosion on the beach, government authorities like the WRD should take up the work and not a private entity,” Palkar claimed.
Meanwhile, local panch Suryakant Andrade said he was not aware when the license to the construction of retaining wall was issued by the Curca-Bambolim panchayat.
“I was present for the fortnightly meeting but the issue of license for the wall construction never came up. I came to know of the license only when the board was put up by the starred hotel,” Andrade claimed.
Finally, it was decided to write to the authorities concerned like the GCZMA, TCP and the Curca panchayat to revoke the licences issued to the wall construction due to violations.
It was also decided to force the Curca-Bambolim panchayat to hold a special gram sabha to discuss on the issue.
