PORVORIM
A delegation of the Goa Green Brigade and Goencho Awaz called on Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and submitted memorandums requesting his intervention to save old trees at Colvale and coconut trees on NH 17 at Guirim.
In its memorandum, the Goa Green Brigade said the expansion work of the NH17 (66) is going on in full swing, but PWD officials supervising the work had failed to ensure protection of age-old trees at Colvale as well as at Guirim.
“At Guirim alone, over 50 coconut trees have been cut illegally at night. The govt should direct PWD officials to realign the Colvale road to save the mango trees and also direct MVR Infra to replant coconut saplings five times the number they have cut on Guirim highway and ensure that they tend the trees for next 10 years.”
“The damage and cutting of trees poses a serious environmental threat due to destruction of biodiversity,” stated the memorandum.
Goa Green Brigade Coordinator Avertino Miranda said Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant had given them a patient hearing and had assured that the six old mango trees at Colavale and the remaining coconut trees at Guirim would be saved.
“In our presence, the chief minister directed the PWD principal chief engineer to hold a meet with members of Goa Green Brigade regarding the realignment of Colvale road to save the mango trees.”
“The chief minister also assured that the debris dumped at the roots of the coconut trees at Guirim would be removed and more trees would be planted,” Miranda said.
Goencho Avaaz member Roshan Mathias said they had also submitted a memorandum to CM, requesting him to save the iconic mango trees along the Colvale highway.
