A group of activists on Monday met Director General of Police Jaspal Singh to demand registering a case of attempted murder against a group of taxi operators, who assaulted their fellow operator during an altercation in April.
The delegation led by Pratima Coutinho demanded the DGP’s intervention to direct the Panaji police to book the accused gang under Section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code. “It was a broad daylight attack at Azad Maidan located barely 20 meters away from the Police Headquarters. The crime has not only occurred in full public view, which has also raised questions on public safety but also close to the PHQ and the Panaji police station,” she said while speaking to the media after the meeting.
Expressing their concerns, the social activists lamented that the accused taxi operators were freely moving around the city even after being booked under minor charges by the Panaji police.
In April-end, two cabbies from rival groups were injured in the attack that broke out while they met at Azad Maidan to resolve an ongoing dispute over the use of taxi stands for casino customers. Two FIRs were registered based on complaint and counter-complaint.
