Activists protest over mixed waste dump on Old Market land

MARGAO
Social activists have protested over the dumping of green and other waste at the government plot which plays host to the fair during the Old Market feast.

Activist Crydon Madeira told the media that the Margao Municipal Council is out to create mini-Sonsodos across the length and breadth of the city for want of mechanism to dispose of green and vegetable, besides mixed waste.

He pointed out that the MMC was dumping of the dry and mixed waste including green waste at the GSUDA land near the KTC bus stand, but was barred from doing so by the High Court. “Since then, the MMC has zeroed in on the government land at Old Market to dispose away the green waste, besides the silt and debris,” he said.

“Margao Municipal Council officials went to the town last year saying they have found a solution to the green waste problem. They even claimed they have procured a machine. If there is indeed a machine with the civic body, why is the green waste dumped in the open and contribute to the spread of vector borne diseases,” Crydon questioned.

He also questioned the silence of the Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai and his group of councillors in the Margao civic body. “The Margao Municipal Council may be ruled by the BJP, that the Fatorda MLA and his councillors should raise their voices to the illegal dumping of waste when the High Court has barred similar dumping on the GSUDA land near the KTC bus stand,” he added.
