In a move that will now make organ transplanting in Goa easier, the government of Goa has constituted a committee to aid and advise the appropriate authority in the transplant of human organs and tissues.
In a notification issued in the name of the Governor, in the official Gazette, on January 9, Under Secretary of Health Trupti Manerkar, has named a nine member committee, headed by the secretary of health, for a two-year period.
The notification issued by the Department of Public Health reads, “In pursuance to Section 13 A of the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, 1994, read with Rule 30 of the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Rules 2014, government is pleased to constitute the following advisory committee to aid and advise the appropriate authority to discharge its functions, for a period of 2 years from the date of issue of this notification.”
Till now, the Goa government had not notified this committee, which is a requirement under the Act, to facilitate organ transplant.
While the Secretary of Health will serve as Chairman of the committee, the director of Health Services will be the member secretary. Other members named are : Dr Madhumohan Prabhudesai, head of department of Urology at the GMC, Dr Shital Lengade, honorary transplant nephrologist, Sandip Naik, member of the MAtruchaya Trust Working Committee, Dr Sharmila Sardesai Correia, Justice (retd) Avinash Lawande, former high court judge, Raj Vaidya who owns Hindu Pharmacy, and Dr Ugam Usgaonkar, head of the department of Ophthalmology.
