After their applications were pending for three years, 174 women from Canacona constituency received Laadli Laxmi sanction letters on Monday.
After handing over sanction letters to the Laadli Laxmi beneficiaries, Deputy Speaker and Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes said the State government had sanctioned the letters amounting to Rs 1.74 crore, despite being under severe financial stress due to the Covid pandemic.
“We must appreciate the government for its commitment towards the society at large. We have handed over the Laadli Laxmi sanction letters to only those who are married for the present.”
The 174 Laadli Laxmi beneficiaries include those in Loliem (18), Poinguinim (30), Khotigao (14), Gaondongri (29), Shristhal (18), Agonda (22) and Canacona municipality (39).
The Laadli Laxmi scheme had been pending for the past three years many of the 174 beneficiaries from different parts of Canacona got married during this period.
The beneficiaries thanked the government for finally honouring its commitment to provide financial assistance for their marriage expenses.
“I am married since the last 3 years, but we can understand the delay by the government. What matters is that the government has kept its promise. This amount will come in handy and has come at the right time for me,” said a beneficiary from Khotigao village.
Sarpanchas of different panchayats were present while sanction letters were handed over to the Laadli Laxmi beneficiaries on Monday, while 39 beneficiaries from Canacona municipality will be handed over sanction orders on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Fernandes also informed about the availability of prescribed forms to claim Rs 2 lakh as compensation by the next of kin for a Covid death in the family.
“Even though no amount of money can bring back lives lost due to Covid, the government is offering Rs 2 lakh to compensate for their loss of a loved one.”
“Forms are available in my office at Chaudi and those eligible are requested to collect these forms and fill them. If they are unable to do so, they can provide us details and we will make arrangements to deliver the forms to them,” said Fernandes.
Fernandes also announced that Deen Dayal Swasthya Seva Yojna (DDSSY) beneficiaries in Canacona need not take the trouble to renew their cards.
“The government has decided to auto-renew them, thereby helping save time and money of the common man,” he said.
