After the High Court order directing the treatment of 20 metric tonnes of Sonsodo waste at the Cacora waste treatment plant from September 1, all eyes are focused on the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) and the Margao Municipal Council how these two bodies will go about the job and comply with the Court directions.
Since the High Court has issued directions to the GWMC to transport the 20 MT of waste from Sonsodo to the Cacora plant via its vehicles, Margao Municipal Council officials pointed out that they would wait for the GWMC officials to send their vehicles to collect the waste.
A senior MMC official, however, pointed out that even if the GWMC vehicles does not come to collect the 20 MT of waste from Sonsodo for transportation to the Cacora waste management plant due to issues over logistics, the civic body would continue to send the Sonsodo waste to the Saligao plant for disposal.
While hearing the Public Interest Litigation filed by the Citizens for Sonsoso on Sonsodo waste imbroglio, the High Court had on Wednesday directed that at least 20 MT of the Sonsodo waste be treated at the Cacora waste management plant from September 1.
Advocate General had submitted before the Court that the GWMC will transport the 20 MT of wet waste from Sonsodo to the Cacora Solid Waste Management Plant through their own specialised vehicles on conditions the MMC bear the cost of such transportation.
It is learnt that the GWMC has recently purchased a garbage compactor, which will be deployed in the operations to transport the Sonsodo waste to Cacora. Given that the garbage compactor is equipped to handle huge waste, sources said the compactor may have a capacity to handle the Sonsodo waste with just one trip to the Cacora plant.
A senior MMC official informed that as per the High Court directions, the GWMC is mandated to start transportation of the Sonsodo waste to Cacora from September 1. “Even for any reason, the transportation of Sonsodo waste to the Cacora plant does not commence from Friday, the MMC has a system in place, wherein waste from Sonsodo will be transported to the Saligao plant till the GWMC is ready to start the waste transportation,” the official said.
The officer added: “As it is, the MMC is required by the High Court order to continue to transport 10 MT of Sonsodo waste to the Saligao plant. We will watch the situation on Friday.”
