the goan I network rMARGAOrrAfter the official request to dispose of the bodies and despite several reminders, the Margao police on Wednesday finally descended at the Margao Municipal building with a fervent plea to the civic authorities to dispose of the bodies and make space for the rising number of unclaimed bodies in South Goa. rArmed with a fresh written request, Margao police station in-charge, PI C L Patil and police official Dilkush Desai called on the Municipal chairperson with a plea to dispose of the dead bodies at the earliest. rThe police claimed that the 17 unclaimed bodies have been lying at the mortuary since 2015 and have been awaiting disposal by the civic body since then. They contended that the police had initially sent a common request for the disposal of the dead bodies, but claimed that the municipal staff insisted on individual letters from the police before the body undertakes the disposal of the bodies. r“We had no option when the civic official concerned insisted that the police make individual letters. Then there were again queries whether any investigation pertaining to the bodies is pending with the police. It was indeed surprising that the municipality was raising these queries when the police had make an official request to the body to dispose of the bodies,” the police said. rAfter discussions with the Municipal chairperson and other officials with PI Patil, the municipal body finally decide to dispose of the bodies after performing the last rites. rMMC chairperson Babita Angle Prabhudesai told The Goan that it has been finally decided that the municipality will dispose of five bodies each in the next two days. “We will take stock of the situation after two days,” Babita said, adding that the municipality will make all arrangements to dispose of the bodies as per the law. rReplying to a question, she attributed the delay in disposing of the bodies, probably due to a communication gap between the police and the municipality, while assuring that things should hopefully fall in place immediately. rNon-disposal of the bodies from the Hospicio mortuary came to the fore after the Margao police were questioned by the medical officers over the delay in the disposal of the unclaimed bodies since the situation was leading to an additional load on the mortuary at the Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim.
