Following the daring dacoity at the residence of Dr Ghanekar in Ganeshpuri-Mapusa, residents of the locality held a late-evening meeting to discuss measures to strengthen security and prevent such incidents in the future.
The robbery, which saw cash and jewellery worth Rs 50-60 lakh stolen, left the family traumatised and created widespread fear among neighbours.
Led by Ashish Shirodkar, President of Ganeshpuri Residents Society, the residents resolved to take proactive steps to safeguard the colony.
“The unfortunate incident has created a sense of fear and insecurity among all residents of the colony. We cannot rely solely on occasional police patrols. We need measures that ensure round-the-clock vigilance,” Shirodkar said.
A key decision taken at the meeting was the installation of IP cameras at prominent locations across Ganeshpuri, in consultation with the police, to monitor suspicious activity and assist law enforcement.
Another critical demand was the setting up of a police outpost near the Gymkhana ground. The residents offered to make a temporary arrangement by converting an existing bus stop into a small monitoring room to ensure constant police presence.
A resident added, “We hope the police will respond positively. The cameras and a local outpost will not only help monitor the area but also reassure residents who are living in fear after the dacoity.”
The memorandum submitted to the Mapusa Police Inspector emphasized that these measures are necessary to restore confidence and maintain peace in Ganeshpuri, highlighting the community’s willingness to actively cooperate with authorities for their own safety.
This marks a concerted effort by the Ganeshpuri community to step up security, combining modern surveillance technology with closer police coordination, in response to the rising concern over law and order in Mapusa.
