After three days of incessant rains, there was finally some respite on Wednesday from the wet spell, but a new problem came to haunt motorists as they had to virtually undergo the nightmare of driving through damaged roads and craters in the commercial capital and outside.
A number of roads in the commercial capital have become unmotorable as they were washed away during the wet spell. Stretches of the road around the Margao Municipal square have become accident prone zones with the road washed away during the rains. The loose metal all along the damaged road has resulted in accidents, with no authority stepping in to rectify the fault or at least lifting away the loose metal.
The episode only brought back the question over the quality of the hot mixed road and the steps initiated by the PWD to repair the same.
The stretch of road around the Old market area, particularly the stretch heading towards Colva side is dotting full of potholes, making riding for two-wheelers difficult.
Motorists have also complained over the bad condition of the National Highway passing through Navelim village between Rosary Auto and the St Xavier’s Chapel. The road, which was dug up to lay cables, has settled down, virtually leaving half the portion of the road unmotorable.
Many a pothole which was removed by the PWD in many parts of the city have re-surfaced again, posing danger to motorists, especially two-wheeler riders.
Though Wednesday was a relatively dry day, with occasional spell of rain, there was no activity from the PWD or its contractors to get the road repaired. Given the bad state of the main road passing opposite the Grace Church, Margao, many had expected PWD officials and
workers to carry out urgent repair of the road taking advantage of the dry spell, but in vain. The bad condition of the road virtually hampered the smooth flow of traffic in the city, resulting in frequent traffic snarls in the heart of the city.
