Goa University teachers have provided relief to 20 families affected by cyclonic winds from the adopted villages of Cacra and Navshi.
In a press note, the Goa University Associate Professor Ramrao Wagh said there was devastation in the villages of Cacra and Navshe due to cyclonic wind and as a result, a huge banyan tree fell on almost 10 houses in Cacra, while many houses rooftops were damaged in Navshi.
The team of Directorate of Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, Goa University, Dr Rajendra Gad, Prof Ramrao Wagh, Dr Prakash Pareikar and Dr Sunder Dhuri personally visited the affected households of the adopted villages to interact with the villages and get the first hand information regarding the damages.
Further, an appeal was made to the Goa University Teachers Association (GUTA) to donate towards the relief funds to help villagers of the adopted villages.
The GUTA collected total amount of Rs 1.40 lakh. The 20 households were distributed with the amount in the range of Rs 8,000, Rs 7,000 and Rs 5,000, depending on the damage towards the property, at a recent function.
The relief fund was distributed to the affected families by Prof R N Mishra in the presence of Dr R V Pai, Dr R S Gad, Dr Prakash Pareinkar, Dr Sundar Dhuri, Prof Ramrao Wagh and Dr Rahul Tripathi.
The village of Cacra (St Cruz) and Navshe“Pirabhat (Curca) have been adopted by the Goa University under Unnat Bharat Abhiyan of the Ministry of Human Resource Development co-ordinated by the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi.
The Goa University is working closely with these villages since year 2018. The GU student and faculty community is closely working with the elected members of the various wards to educate the villagers through
various hygienic programmes, solid waste management, youth development, formation of Village Development Committee, Formation of Biodiversity Committee etc.
Household surveys of the five villages were conducted last year for the total 1,500 villagers, to understand the village characteristics from various perspectives.
