Satish Shinde, who was arrested in connection with the August 28 shooting targeting Neo Majestic Casino director Srinivas Nayak, was on Thursday remanded to five days’ police custody by the JMFC court.
Shinde was apprehended at Mumbai airport while he was allegedly travelling to Dubai for business, his counsel, Adv Vinayak Porob, told the court. According to the defence, Shinde was intercepted at around 10.45 am, but his formal arrest was recorded only at around 3 pm.
The defence challenged the legality of the arrest and questioned the time gap between Shinde’s apprehension and the recording of his arrest.
Porob also questioned the manner in which Shinde was brought from Mumbai to Goa, arguing that no transit warrant had been obtained. The defence also raised objections over how the grounds of arrest were communicated to Shinde’s family.
Opposing the defence plea, Assistant Public Prosecutor Tejas Chodankar sought police custody, citing the alleged conspiracy behind the shooting and the need for further investigation. After hearing both sides, the JMFC granted the police five days’ custody of Shinde.
The defence said it would examine the court order and consider further legal remedies, including seeking bail.
The arrest comes amid the ongoing Crime Branch investigation into the shooting at Neo Majestic Casino in Porvorim. Nayak was targeted by armed assailants on August 28 but escaped unhurt. Police have since arrested several suspects in connection with the case and are investigating the alleged conspiracy and roles of those involved.
