Parts of Mapusa continued to suffer without PWD pipeline water as aged infrastructure coupled with murky water has slowed down pumping of raw water at the Assonora water treatment plant.
Several areas in town have been suffering from irregular water supply for the last four days even as the engineers at the treatment plant have been on their toes in trying to ease the situation. The PWD officials in Mapusa are releasing water in different areas on alternate days in order to minimise the public backlash against the department.
Sources informed that due to heavy rain a lot of muck has made its way into the raw water which in turn makes the process of treating the water difficult. “There is so much dirt in the water that we have to constantly clean the filters. This slows down the process of treating the water,” a senior PWD official informed. He also said that most of the pumps at the treatment plant have become old which in turn slows down the entire process.
Councillor of Ward 20, Prakash Bhivshet informed that some people from his ward in Peddem/Gaunsa-vaddo did not get pipeline water for at least four days. “Today (on Friday) the PWD has released water to those people but the pressure is very low,” Bhivshet said.
Assistant Engineer PWD (water), Mahesh Kenavdekar admitted that the Assonora treatment plant was facing some issues and therefore the water supply to Mapusa was affected. “Efforts are being made to resolve the problem at the earliest. The water supply will be normalised soon,” Kenavdekar said.
