Locals who gathered to oppose the setting up of waste facility near the crematorium at Corjuem, Aldona.

Several villagers of Corjuem, Aldona on Sunday opposed setting up of a material recovery facility to sort out dry waste in front of the crematorium in Corjuem, Aldona.

The villagers said that the panchayat was planning to set up the facility to sort our garbage which could affect the locality and create problems for people visiting the crematorium.

“Garbage plant is desirable but should not be constructed in front of the crematorium,” the villagers opined.

In a meeting held in the village on Sunday evening it was decided that a delegation of the villagers will meet Aldona Sarpanch Ashwin D’Souza and Aldona MLA Carlos Ferreira on Monday to discuss over the matter.

Local panchayat member Yashwant Parwar who was present at the meeting said that he was with the people of the village. He further informed that the panchayat had said a shed would be constructed on a government land in the panchayat area but the site was not identified.

“When we went to inquire about the construction of the shed, the panchayat misled us. Locals were not informed about the purpose of the shed,” Devidas Panjikar, a local informed.

Congress leader and a resident of Corjuem, Amarnath Panjikar said that the village needs a site to tackle the waste but the site in front of the crematorium was not appropriate.

“We will cooperate in finding a place to set up the MRF site at some other place but this site is not right. We will oppose the facility on this site,” Panjikar said.

Several other villagers also spoke against the erection of the MRF at the spot and vowed to oppose it.
