MARGAO
Aleixo, however, returned on Wednesday itself to remain present with his close supporters at Nuvem in the evening while other leaders were still holed up in the national capital, indicating that the four-time MLA is still in the reckoning for the Congress ticket for the Nuvem seat.
Aleixo close supporters have exuded confidence that the former Power Minister is very much a strong contender for the Congress ticket. That he flew down to Goa on Wednesday itself to attend a meeting of workers fixed days ago, indicates that all is still not over for the Congress heavyweight.
For the Nuvem seat, Aleixo is being challenged for the party ticket by two-time Nuvem Zilla Panchayat member, Wilfred D’Sa. Wilfred has emerged as Aleixo’s challenger for the party ticket after his candidature received the backing and support of Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President Luizinho Faleiro and his group. In fact, Wilfred is one of the three young candidates, besides Clafacio Dias (Cuncolim) and Mariano Dias (Cortalim), who have been groomed and projected as new and young faces since the time Luizinho took over the reigns of the party around two years ago.
Aleixo told The Goan that he did call on Congress leader while he was in Delhi on Wednesday, but hastened to add that he does not know whether he is in the reckoning for the ticket or not. The former Power Minster, however, asserted that he would stand for election only on the Congress party and not on any other banner.
