After the Congress-led Digambar Kamat government and later the BJP-led Laxmikant Parsekar dispensation failed to restore the ancestral house into a museum, all eyes are now focused on the Manohar Parrikar-led coalition government, which swears by Goem, Goemkar and Goemkarponn, to unveil its stand on the acquisition and restoration of the crumbling house at Colmorod
for posterity.
This question has come to the fore on the eve of the commemoration of the 148th death anniversary of the great nat
ionalist at the Comunidade square on Saturday, where the TCP Minister Vijai Sardesai and Margao MLA Digambar Kamat
and freedom fighters are expected to pay tributes to the leader.
Incidentally, while the Margao Municipal Council controlled by the TCP Minister has adopted a resolution to acquire the crumbling heritage Camara de Salcete building at Old market, nothing has been heard from the civic body nor from the TCP Minister on the question of the restoration of the ancestral house of Dr Gomes till date.
The TCP Minister was not available for his comment on the restoration of Dr Francisco Luis Gomes ancestral house, but records indeed spoke about Sardesai's requests to the BJP-led government during the last five years to acquire the house and convert the same into a museum.
Hopes were raised over the last five years that the ancestral house of Dr Gomes would be acquired by the then Laxmikant Parsekar-led government after then Fisheries Minister, Avertano Furtado made a strong case for the acquisition of the house.
The attempt, however, turned futile after Avertano claimed that the acquisition of the house could not take place since the ownership was in the hands of a private party from Margao.
A glance at the Margao Municipal Council records showed that the civic body had mooted a proposal to the government way back in February 13, 2014 for the acquisition of the house area admeasuring 1,143 sq mts. The avowed objective behind the acquisition was to restore the house into a museum, which never saw the light of day till date.
Dr Gomes was a great physician, writer, historian, economist and political scientist. He was acclaimed for his outstanding contribution to the field of liberal philosophy and economics and represented Portuguese India in the Portuguese Parliament from 1861 to 1869.
