The Goan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) hosted Pooja Kapur, Ambassador of India to Denmark on Wednesday. GCCI managing committee member Harshvardhan Bhatkule welcomed Kapur who had visited to build synergies between Goa and Denmark and requested the Ambassador to advise in connecting with the right companies and connect with the local Danish municipalities for city partnerships.
“Goa could learn from countries like Denmark in administrative reforms, sustainability reforms, EODB. Goa has a huge shipbuilding industry. Scandinavian countries needed hybrid vehicles for transport and Goa could look at partnering with Denmark for this. Food processing was another area Goa was interested in promoting,” stated Dempo.
Pointing out that till 2012, mining played a big role in providing employment in the rural and hinterland areas while tourism was prevalent in the coastal belt but with mining shut, the focus had increased on tourism. “Goa has the potential to do much more in tourism, but the question is how to promote sustainable tourism and boost other economic activity,” stated Dempo, wondering if Goa could replicate the Scandinavian model of economic activity. “Since Denmark had expertise in the sustainable model of industry, could we explore the possibility of using the speed of the rivers to generate power,” wondered Dempo.
In her address the Ambassador stated, “Denmark is a sea-facing nation with a population of 5.5 million people, welcoming 16 million tourists a year. She opined that coastline, culture and cuisine are the three main factors considered in a successful tourist hub. Denmark does not have presence in these but still attracts tourists based on innovations in these areas. Goa has these three strongholds and needs to work on the same.”
Denmark is one of the richest countries in the world and is a huge welfare state. Denmark likes to see itself as a green superpower. Copenhagen is in the top two cities of the world in terms of work-life balance. Government of India is partnering with Denmark on several green initiatives “ Swachch Bharat, Ujwala, Digital India, Jal Shakti, Sustainable Urbanisation and also on Green Hydrogen. She said that Denmark prides itself on being green “ and everything is conceived and done as sustainable. Earlier, Denmark had helped India in the ‘White Revolution’. Denmark is setting up a Centre of Excellence in Himachal Pradesh for the animal husbandry sector. Invest Denmark has an office in Bangalore which helps Indian companies invest in Denmark. India has also signed an MOU with Denmark on Skill Development.
Pratima Dhond, Nitin Kunkolienkar, Vincent Ramos, Dr Jennifer Kamat, Milind Prabhu, Sanjay Amonkar, Pallavi Arondekar and others too participated in the bilateral discussions.
