Acting on a complaint of illegal retrenchment from a section of workmen of the Mapusa Urban Coop Bank, the Commissioner of Labour Employment has called for joint discussion between the bank liquidator and the employees on July 20.
“There is a complaint against illegal retrenchment by the Mapusa Urban Cooperative Bank of Goa Ltd through the liquidator. I shall hold a joint discussion so as to resolve the matter amicably on July 20 at 11 am,” said Raju Gawas, Commissioner Labour and Employment. At least 74 workmen in a complaint to the Labour Commissioner said the Mapusa Urban Co-op Bank, through its liquidator, retrenched them illegally.
The complaint states that the Liquidator Daulat Hawaldar on December 29, 2020, issued an order retrenching 74 workmen. “The order amounts to retrenchment without following the procedure contemplated under the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947 and in violation of section 25G of the said Act,” the workmen said in the complaint.
“The action of retrenchment by the bank is arbitrary and in violation of principles of natural justice. The order of retrenchment has been issued without giving an opportunity for the the workers,” the complaint further said.
The workmen urged the Commissioner to direct the employer to withdraw the order and direct him to pay full wages from Dec 29 till the date of final retrenchment.
