Anger is brewing in Porvorim constituency after Independent MLA Rohan Khaunte swiftly decided to join the BJP-led government in the State.

Speaking to The Goan, many people accused Khaunte of betraying the voters, especially after his bitter campaign against BJP in the 2017 polls.
Said Lavy Pinto, a voter from Porvorim: “In more than 25 constituencies, people voted against the BJP. However, we’re now unable to change the fact that the elected representatives, chosen for their stand against corruption and policies of the BJP, are now supporting the same party we voted out. Extremely disappointed and upset with the turn of events.”
Another voter requesting anonymity said, “I as a voter from Porvorim, who voted for Rohan, feel completely cheated. Rohan and his team always talked about how BJP is manipulating the electoral process and how much they were against the BJP. He has betrayed the trust of those who voted for him.”
Former Salvador-do-Mundo sarpanch and admin of United Porvorkar WhatsApp group, Sanjeev Naik, said he was not aware under what circumstances Khaunte took the decision to join the BJP alliance.
“No doubt there is lot of anger among people. If Khaunte has taken the decision for the sake of development of Porvorim, then it is fine. He has to function as an independent and should not support the communal ideologies of RSS and BJP,” stated Naik.
