Anjuna p’yat cracks whip on structures built in NDZ

panchayat issues public notice to owners to produce licence/permissions from authorities within 7 days

Days after the Bombay High Court at Goa sought response from Anjuna-Caisua panchayat on its plan to proceed against suspect structures along the coast, Anjuna panchayat on Saturday asked the owners of the structures in the No Development Zone (NDZ) to produce licence/permissions from authorities to carry out commercial activities within seven days or else face appropriate action under the Goa Panchayat Raj Act.

The village panchayat issued a public notice listing almost 211 survey numbers of structures that were identified to be lying in the No Development Zone (NDZ) during the joint inspection carried out by the panchayat and the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) a little over a month back.

The joint inspection was carried out as per the directions of the High Court.

Interestingly, around four properties belonging to the Goa Tourism Development Corporation (GTDC) and the controversial nightclub Waters Beach Louge and Grill Private Ltd, besides others are part of the survey numbers listed.

“The occupants/owners etc. concerned having structures/cottages/restaurants/huts etc. in the listed survey numbers are called upon to produce license/permissions/NOCs in respect of the structures and also permissions from authorities for carrying out activities and commercial activities should be produced before the Anjuna-Caisua panchayat within 7 days of the publications of the public notice,” said Anjuna Sarpanch Laxmidas Chimulkar.

He further said if the owners fail to produce the documents, then the panchayat will take appropriate action under the Goa Panchayat Raj Act.

A resident of Assagao, Desmond Alvares, who has also been actively following up cases of illegal constructions along the coast informed The Goan that some of the survey numbers listed in the public notice have been repeated.

“Actually, around 275 survey numbers were shown to the High Court but in the public notice only 211 numbers are shown and some of which have been repeated. I smell a rat in this,” Alvares said.
