The Water Resources Department (WRD) has issued an alert to the villages in Bicholim about releasing of excess water from the Anjunem Dam. The warning comes as the water level in the dam is soon to reach the 90-meter mark. Once this level is reached, excess water will be released into the rivers.
"Impounding of water in the Anjunem Dam began on June 20, 2024. As of July 11, 2024, the water level has reached 869.5 meters. It is expected that the dam will fill up to 90.00 meters, which is 3.20 meters below the full reservoir level, within a few days, necessitating the release of excess water," reads the 'urgent note' issued by WRD Executive Engineer.
The excess water will be routed through the Costi Nadi and Valvanti River during low tides. The WRD stated that this could increase the water levels of these rivers.
"Villagers are advised to be cautious and take necessary precautions," it said. The WRD has further urged people to be careful while washing clothes, taking baths, or taking their cattle to the riverside and avoid crossing the rivers.
