While Karnataka and Goa are locked in a tussle over sharing of Kalsa-Bhandura, the issue which is sub-judice, in another development political leaders in Khanapur taluka have now claimed taluka's share in the diverted water from the controversial Kalsa-Bhandura rivulets.
Former Khanapur MLA and BJP leader Prahlad Remani, who is heading a team of leaders, has decided to file a writ petition in the Supreme Court claiming for Khanapur taluka's share in diverted water. The petition would be filed during the next hearing over the issue by the Mhadei Water Dispute Tribunal.
Addressing media persons, Remani said Karnataka is diverting the water for drinking needs of the people of nine talukas in Belagavi and Dharwad districts. “However, it is ironical to state that no one has considered the needs of Khanapur taluka where the farmers and villagers are suffering due to weak monsoons since last couple of years,” Remani said.
Stating that ‘it's a now or never situation,’ for the people of Khanapur taluka, Remani further said he has already discussed the matter with the Supreme Court advocates in New Delhi and is poised to file the petition as per their advice.
Accordingly, the petition would be filed before the Tribunal, urging it to consider the drinking water need of the people of eastern Khanapur taluka.
“Thus, the drying ponds and lakes could be filled with the water diverted from Kalsa-Bhandura project by lift irrigation and justice done to the people of the taluka where the project and the river originate,” Remani said.
“A letter will be sent to the state government demanding the share of Khanapur taluka apart from filing a petition. We will not leave any stone unturned for the benefit of the people of the taluka,” Remani ascertained.
