Anxiety gripped the Port Town on Thursday morning following the sudden ill-health of Vasco MLA and KTC Chairman Carlos Almeida as news of Almeida being rushed to Manipal hospital spread like wildfire.
As news began to spread on social media platforms, concerned residents began calling BJP councillors and were also seen gathering at the BJP Vasco office and at Almeida’s house in Vasco to enquire about his health.
A senior resident, who rushed to the BJP office on Thursday morning said, “This is a shock. I saw him waving out to people on Wednesday evening during the Shigmo parade. And now, someone tells me he has been admitted to hospital. I still cannot believe it. I hope he is fine and gets well soon.”
When contacted, MMC Chairperson Deepak Naik, a close aide of Almeida confirmed that Almeida was shifted to hospital early Thursday morning after losing consciousness.
“Almeida felt uneasy after breakfast and fell unconscious in the bathroom. We rushed him to SMRC hospital, where he was given primary medication by Dr Sawoikar and the doctor there noticed that Almeida had suffered a stroke with slight paralysis to the left leg and hand,” said Naik.
“We rushed him to Manipal Hospital where he was treated and is now recovering. His health is stable and he will be kept under observation for 2 days,” said Naik.
As news spread, Panchayat Minister Mauvin Godinho, Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha and other councillors from Vasco also visited Manipal to enquire about his well-being.
When contacted, Councillor Fredrick Henriques said,  “It is shocking, but we are happy that he is stable and out of danger.”
According to sources, timely medical intervention averted major health complications for Almeida.  Doctors also informed that Almeida will be kept under observation in the ICU for the next 48 hours and have appealed to well-wishers to refrain from meeting him while he is under observation for the next two days.
