PANAJI
The capital city’s business and social circles were left shell shocked since early Friday morning when news emerged that well-known entrepreneur and Rotarian, Sadhashiv Sirsat, had succumbed in the midst of his treadmill routine at a prominent city gym.
Sirsat, 54, collapsed following a massive heart attack while working out on the treadmill and died even before the ambulance could reach there. He was the President of the Rotary Club of Panaji, and the news of his shocking death went viral on social media platforms instantly. The tragic incident, meanwhile, has triggered intense debate over fitness gyms which have mushroomed in recent years with the growing trend of Goans imbibing the fitness culture.
Prominent city-based doctor, Oscar Rebello, strongly advocated a law mandating every gym to have a working defibrillator machine on its premises to save lives in situations such as Friday’s in which Sirsat succumbed.
In a blog-post titled ‘Are our Gyms equipped to save Sadashiv Sirsats?’ Dr Rebello wrote law must also mandate that gym personnel undergo courses in basic life resuscitation techniques - CPR - and refresh the knowledge at regular intervals.
