MARGAO
Opposition parties in the state on Wednesday demanded that the BJP must apologise for its insulting remarks on the Goan diaspora across the globe.
Both Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat and Goa Forward Chief Vijai Sardesai said Goans settled abroad have every right to raise issues plaguing Goa.
Kamat said Goemkars all across the globe are proud of their motherland and they contribute immensely for its betterment and welfare.
He condemned the insulting remark by BJP office-bearers calling the Goan diaspora ‘bebe’ (frogs).
While demanding an immediate apology from the BJP, Kamat urged the government to listen and consider the views and suggestions of the Goans staying abroad.
“The Goans who are working abroad have always kept their connection with the motherland. They have always contributed to the economy of the State in foreign exchange earnings. The government and all political parties are duty-bound to recognise their contribution,” he said.
Kamat said the attitude of the BJP government has always been anti-NRI. He reminded the local BJP leadership that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is always addressing the Indian diaspora for his propaganda meetings abroad. He questioned whether the BJP wants to use NRIs only for gaining political mileage.
Goa Forward Chief Vijai Sardesai also lashed out at a BJP spokesman for terming the Goans abroad, who are protesting against Mollem projects, as frogs.
Saying that Goans all over the world celebrate World Goans Day on October 24, Sardesai demanded that either the BJP spokesman or the government tender an apology for the remark or the people of Goa would take a pledge to send home the BJP in the coming elections.
