Aquem-Baixo locals oppose heavy vehicles using narrow roads

The villagers of Aquem-Baixo have requested the RTO and Traffic Police to keep a watch on the heavy vehicles using the narrow Rawafond-Navelim Church road, in spite of sign boards being installed at both ends of the road.

Tuesday afternoon saw villagers intercepting a huge 6-wheeler truck plying on the narrow road before intimating the police. To their shock and surprise, however, a PCR van reached the spot and told the villagers to come to the Margao police station to lodge a complaint.
The villagers refused to accompany the truck to the police station, on the plea that if a common man can be fined on the road for not wearing a helmet, why can't a truck, which is on a "no heavy vehicle" road be fined?
Navelim Civic and Consumer Forum Secretary, Joseph L Vaz said that every alternate day there are a lot of traffic police and sometimes even RTO catching two-wheeler riders for helmet and other offenses, but never have we seen them fining a heavy vehicle for entering the ‘no heavy vehicle' road.
"There have been many fatal accidents on this road, the last one was about two months ago when a lady was crushed very badly under the wheels of a concrete mixer truck," he said.
He claimed that around 50 trucks ply on the narrow road, including tipper trucks and during the nights they drive at high speeds, while requesting the RTO and Traffic Police to maintain a watch, even occasionally and sometimes in the night too, and fine the errant drivers so as to deter them from entering this narrow road.
