A resident of Sao Jose de Areal Menino Fernandes has lodged a complaint against the South Western Railway for diverting the public vehicular traffic/ transport through the residential colony – Sonum Township, Nessai by erecting the height barrier on the main public road.

In his complaint lodged with the South Goa District Collector, Fernandes claimed the diversion of traffic via the residential colony had caused extensive damage to the infrastructure, including the storm water drains, besides causing noise pollution, dust pollution and hardships to the residents of Sonum Township, Sao Jose de Areal.

He has demanded to know how the authorities can divert vehicular traffic through a residential colony road.

The Railways had erected the height barrier in view of the ongoing work on the road over bridge at the Nessai railway crossing. Fernandes said railway staff at a February 12, 2026 meeting at the Nessai crossing admitted it was wrong to divert traffic through the residential colony, but no solution has been implemented so far.
