Alert residents of Sao Jose de Areal caught a goods career red-handed while in the act of unloading waste at Mattimorod in the wee hours of Saturday.
As the vehicle was in the process of unloading the garbage bags, residents drew the attention of the villagers, who rushed to the spot and called the Maina-Curtorim police.
Activist Freddy Travasso said upon questioning, the vehicle driver disclosed that he has brought the waste from a starred resort at Benaulim, adding that the waste was being dumped near a scrap yard.
Maina-Curtorim police, when contacted, said the goods carrier, which was seized by the police and brought to the police station, was later released after the owner was fined Rs 100.
Travasso has called for strict action against the vehicle owner, with a plea to the panchayat body to maintain vigil against waste dumping.
