Unknown miscreants set fire to the plastic waste that was stored in the garbage pit at Ramnagri-Mugalli in Sao Jose de Areal village on Sunday morning.

Locals pointed out that foul odour from the burning plastic waste only created a nuisance in the area and posed a health hazard to the neighbouring residents.

Agitated over the nuisance, the local residents brought the matter to the notice of the Areal Panchayat as well as the Maina-Curtorim police.

Residents in the know informed that the same place had played host to a similar fire on February 13 when unknown culprits had set the plastic waste afire, which was later extinguished by the Margao fire brigade.

A local resident Tenny Paul Fernandes pointed out that he had already brought the matter to the notice of the departments concerned including the district police chief, Chief Medical Officer Panaji, Goa State Pollution Control Board, Director of Panchayats, Health Officer Curtorim, BDO and Deputy Director of Panchayats.

Fernandes claimed that waste is also being burnt along the interior roads, main roads and the interior wards of Sao Jose De Areal. There are instances wherein people burn their garbage in drainages which can cause water contamination, he added.
