Belagavi
Arihant Hospital in Belagavi has achieved a major milestone with another successful kidney transplant, performing the city’s first laparoscopic donor nephrectomy. In this life-saving procedure, a 47-year-old woman donated a kidney to her 45-year-old younger sister.
The recipient had been on dialysis for two years, facing serious health problems like vascular access failures, chronic allergic bronchitis, and coronary artery disease. Despite regular dialysis, her condition was worsening, making the transplant crucial.
Doctors used an advanced laparoscopic nephrectomy technique, a minimally invasive procedure that helped the donor recover quickly. She was discharged just three days after surgery, while the recipient was discharged after eight days with a significant improvement in her health.
One of the most striking outcomes was the drop in the recipient’s creatinine levels, which had been dangerously high at 12 mg/dl. After the transplant, they reduced to a healthy 0.6 mg/dl, proving the success of the procedure.
The transplant team was led by Dr Vijaykumar Patil, Consultant Nephrologist and Renal Transplant Physician, along with a skilled surgical team: Dr Amit Mungarwadi, Consultant Urologist, Dr Shivangouda, Dr Bhuvanesh, Dr Avinash, and anaesthetists Dr Prashanta MB, Dr Avinash Londhe, and Dr Anusha.
Dr MD Dixit, Chief Cardiac Surgeon, praised the team for their outstanding work and the successful outcome. Abhinandan Patil and Uttam Patil also congratulated the hospital for this remarkable achievement.
This successful transplant not only highlights medical advancements in Belagavi but also shows the life-changing impact of organ donation.
