South Goa Principal and District Judge, Irshad Agha on Saturday said that Article 14 and 22(1) makes it obligatory for the State to ensure equality before law and a legal system which promotes justice on the basis of equal opportunity to all.
Speaking at the District Legal Services Authority in collaboration with the South Goa Advocates Association organised a legal awareness camp “Kaideachi Lokank Seva Ani Sanskrutik Melavo “ 2022” here on Saturday, Judge Agha, who is the chairman of the District Legal Services Authority, South further said that Article 14 and 22(1) makes it obligatory for the State to ensure equality before law and a legal system which promotes justice on the basis of equal opportunity to all.
Judge Agha said that Article 39-A of Constitution of India provides for free legal aid to the poor and weaker sections of the society and ensures justice to all, even as he called for awareness amongst the general public on the various facilities and benefits provided by District Legal Services Authority.
The Secretary, District Legal Services Authority South Goa, Sarika Fal Dessai, in her welcome address, explained the purpose of the event was to create legal awareness and promote mediation.
She said the main objective of NALSA was to provide free and competent legal services to the weaker sections of the society and to ensure that opportunities for securing justice are not denied to any citizen.
“There is a need to improve the legal aid and urged the advocates to come forward with ideas,” she said.
Adv Prasad Naik, President of South Goa Advocates Association said that the function was aimed at providing legal Information to the general public with special emphasis to create awareness on the concept of mediation.
He further said that mediation promotes and motivates parties to arrive at a settlement which is acceptable to both the parties and once settlement is done there is no scope for any appeal.
He further requested all law professionals to promote mediation as that would bring down pendency of cases in various courts.
Additional Sessions Judge Vincent D’Silva, besides Judges, MLAs Digambar Kamat and Vijai Sardesai besides Margao Municipal Chairperson Lyndon Pereira, former MLA, Damu Naik, NGOs and various other dignitaries from all fields attended the programme.
