Candidates and political parties campaigning in Tuem ahead of the Lok Sabha poll and Mandrem bypoll are aware of a key issue affecting residents in the area.
With acute water shortage causing hardship to locals over the past two months, candidates have quickly made it a poll issue and have begun promising to resolve the water crisis if they are elected to power.
Locals from Bhomwada and Gaokarwada, two of the worst affected areas in Tuem, have met officials of the water supply department office in Pernem on several occasions, requesting them to solve their water problems.
“Each time, we were promised water supply for a few hours in a day, but till now, nothing has been done in the matter,” complained a resident.
As a temporary solution, water is being supplied by tankers to the affected areas once a week, which is insufficient for local requirement.
Water is supplied to entire Pernem taluka from the 15 MLD Chandel project and Tuem and surrounding areas also receive water from this project, as well as through a few wells in the area.
Upset after tap water was not supplied for the last eight days, a group of locals confronted the pump operators to demand an explanation.
“We have been facing sever water problem since the
last two months and after we confronted the pump operator on Tuesday, we received water at 9 pm and that too, for
three hours,” said a local, Gautam Naik.
