Residents from the tail end of Assagao village have appealed to the human rights commission to appoint a technical expert to check the treatment facility at the bore well, after alleging that the facility has not been connected to bore well and water unfit for consumption is supplied to villagers for many years.
In a rejoinder filed on Thursday before the human rights commission through social activist Aishwarya Salgaonkar, the villagers have demanded immediate supply of clean portable water.
The villagers had repeatedly protested about insufficient and interrupted water supply to the village and had even protested before the PWD office.
Accusing the PWD of having done nothing to resolve their grievances, the villagers decided to approach the human rights commission.
When the commission sought a reply from the PWD, the department replied the area in question was at the tail end and around 5 kms from the tank at DMC college plateau.
The PWD stated that water through a bore well costing Rs 14.58 lakh is being supplied to the area through public taps.
In their rejoinder, the villagers claimed that the water treatment facility is not connected to the bore well and alleged that untreated water has been supplied to people for many years.
The villagers have also placed a report from the health department stating that the water is not fit for human consumption. They have demanded that the PWD be penalised for supplying untreated water and for charging money for treated water.
