A number of people from different parts of the State attended a meeting at Copremoddi-Assolda late Friday night, with some effigies of ‘Coalasuras’ brought to the venue and later set ablaze.
The meeting was organised by the Assolda-Curchorem Goyant Kollso Naka (GKN) movement to create awareness against the rail double-tracking and the coal issue.
Speakers at the meeting provided details on all mega projects, including the double-tracking and coal transportation, and its impact on Goa, while appealing to people to unite against the State government which has been planning to destroy the environment in the name of development.
Accusing the government of planning to bring coal in the State through the railways, waterways and even roadways, the speakers said people must stand united to let the government know that Goans do not want coal in the State.
A large police force from different police stations was stationed at the venue to maintain law and order.
