Assolna villagers cry foul over Telecom Policy

MARGAO

The Telecom Policy which has been used by the government to bulldoze its way with mobile towers in the towns and villages has come under opposition from the Assolna gram sabha on Sunday.

The issue came up for discussion at the meeting chaired by sarpanch Ivan Fernandes, wherein members questioned the government for installing towers by taking the shelter of the policy.

Members pointed out that the Telecom Policy is just a policy and the government cannot dilute the provisions of the Goa Panchayat Raj Act by doing away with the permissions required from the local panchayat.

The gram sabha has requested the sarpanch to write to the government on the resolution opposing the Telecom Policy.

The gram sabha also deliberated on the allotment of token numbers by the panchayat to illegal structures during the tenure of the administrators. After much discussion, the gram sabha has resolved that no token numbers should be issued to structures erected on agricultural fields and in water bodies.

Members also raised the issue of the transportation of fish along the Assolna-Cuncolim road, claiming that the transportation is causing a nuisance and health hazard to the residents and motorists.

Members demanded that fish vehicles heading to the Cuncolim industrial estate or other destinations from the Cutbona fishing jetty should be directed to take the Assolna-Chinchinim-NH 66 road to proceed to Cuncolim.

The gram sabha has been told to write a letter to the District Collector on priority.

The gram sabha has also constituted various committees. Fredrick Borges has been re-appointed as the Chairman of the Assolna bio-diversity management committee.
