Goa Police has issued guidelines to all banking institutions in the state concerning the security measures for protection against debit and credit card cloning at ATM premises.
The police were acting on reports of people getting duped repeatedly after cash was withdrawn fraudulently from their accounts through ATM transactions in Goa and attempts were made by criminals to install card cloning devices and cameras to capture ATM PINs.
Among the security measures suggested by Goa Police is the precaution by deputing a personnel by the bank to check the ATM machine twice every day“ once in the morning and once in the evening “ to check if the card slot has been tampered with and to look for spy cameras in the ATM booth.
Goa Police has suggested that the private agency employed by the bank to manage the ATM operation should also ensure the integrity of the ATM machine while loading cash.
Besides, an armed security guard hired from a registered security agency has to be posted outside the ATM booth at all times and he should have contact numbers of the bank manager and the police in case of emergency.
Installation of additional CCTV cameras with night vision outside the ATM booth and preservation of the CCTV camera feed for at least a month has also been suggested. Customers have been requested to cover the keypad while punching in their PIN while also calling upon banks to ensure that cloning-proof ATM machines are installed.
