Bailancho Ekvott has urged Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to issue directions to the various departments to install sanitary pads vending machines in the ladies washrooms as part of the countrywide movement to provide sanitary pads to women.
She also reminded the Chief Minister that the protection and safety of women working in the night shifts is the responsibility of the employer and the state government has to direct the latter to follow the rules.
Addressing the media, Bailancho Ekvott Convenor and women’s rights activist Auda Viegas said section 66(1)b of the Factories Act is a discriminatory section as it restricts work timing for women in factories and industries. “It is also unconstitutional and violates the fundamental right of women to equality under Article 15 of the Constitution of India,” she added.
“We feel that the safety and protection of women working in the night shifts can be taken care if measures are ensured as per the Protection of Women from Sexual Harassment at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act 2013. Also, women need to be trained in self defence. The police should also write to the employers that it is their duty to protect women employees working in the night shifts. The police should also conduct verification of drivers and ensure security in cabs,” Auda said, adding “any untoward incident that occurs while a woman is employed in the night shift has to be dealt with the seriousness it deserves.”
