MARGAO
After targeting major establishments for defaulting in handing over segregated waste, the Margao Municipal Council zeroed in on street fast-food joints across the commercial capital last night.
Led by Chief Officer Sidhivinayak Naik, the municipal team was on the ground for well around three hours, and issued challans to around 26 street hawkers and restaurants, right from the Chowgule college area to Konkan railway station, opposite Margao railway police station and near the KTC bus stand.
The hawkers and establishments were all booked under the Goa Non-biodegradable Garbage Control Act 1996. Since they were all first-time offenders of not giving segregated waste, but littered the space around, they were issued a challan of Rs 2,000.
The CO informed that the exercise was carried out as information revealed that the fast food joints were not handing over segregated waste and many a unscrupulous hawker preferred to dispose of the waste at the transfer stations.
Besides the CO, other members of the team included sanitary inspector Sanjay Sangelkar, supervisors Romio Fernandes and Concy. The drive has resulted in the collection of additional segregated waste, thereby reducing daily garbage collection by five tonnes.
