An autopsy on the body of the American tourist, who died after being assaulted multiple times at Pernem on Tuesday, has revealed that the tourist choked to death after he was assaulted a final time in a marshy field at Korgao.

According to Pernem Police Inspector Devendra Gad, the autopsy report on Caitanya Holt (30) revealed that 496 grammes of mud was found in the stomach of the deceased, indicating that he had choked to death after mud had entered into his nose and mouth.

“During the autopsy, there were also injuries and scratch marks on his back,” PI Gad added.

“We are consulting with senior police officials and this offence may be registered under Section 304 IPC. Further investigations will be continued on Monday,” added PI Gad.

It may be recalled that Holt had been first assaulted by a group of African nationals, before he was mistaken for a thief by locals and he was later assaulted at the Korgao market. He then fled to the nearby fields where he was assaulted yet again in a marshy field, eventually leading to his death.
