The 2011 batch of the Gomantak Ayurveda Mahavidyalaya and Research Centre in Shiroda are faced with the prospect of losing their entire graduation after the students were told that Central Council for Indian Medicine (CCIM) has ‘not approved’ the batch.
Thirty-six students had completed their four-and-half year course in Ayurveda at the Research Centre in Shiroda this year. However, the CCIM ruled that their batch was not approved as the College had failed to meet necessary requirements and standards and had barred the college from admitting students.
However, the college approached the Bombay High Court at Goa and had secured a stay on the order allowing them to admit students. This was in 2011.
The students were admitted and completed their course. But now, at the time of seeking provisional certificates ahead of going for their internship, the CCIM declined to issue certificates to the students on grounds that their admissions were not approved.
This is the only batch which has not received approval from CCIM while there is no problem with the subsequent batches in the college.
The affected students have already completed seven months of their internship at the state-run hospitals with four months remaining after which they are expected to be given certificates as ayurvedic doctors. However, since it was brought to their notice that the issue is yet to be resolved, the interns have stopped reporting for duty at State-run hospitals where they have been posted.
The students had earlier also approached the Goa Board of the Indian System of Medicine and Homeopathy (GBISMH), the local authority overseeing the college, asking it to resolve the issue by September 5. They have also approached Union Minister of AYUSH Shripad Naik and have sought his intervention in the matter.
The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), meanwhile, has sought justice for the aggrieved students and has threatened to step up its agitation saying the students were left in the lurch by their college which kept them in dark about their status.
