Around 1,500 doctors affiliated to the Indian Medical Association (IMA)-Goa Branch on Friday attended only emergency cases as a part of IMA’s nationwide protest against the Central government decision to allow practitioners of certain streams of Ayurveda to perform 58 surgical procedures.
Prominent member of IMA Dr Shekhar Salkar met Union AYUSH Minister and North Goa Member of Parliament Shripad Naik and submitted a memorandum against this move dubbed as “mixopathy”by the IMA.
It may be recalled that the IMA-Goa President Dr S Samuel had also visited Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on December 8 urging him to look into the matter.
IMA had voiced deep dismay and disappointment over the steps taken by the Central government to disrupt the allopathic modern system of medicine which has been successfully functioning since independence.
In its memorandum submitted to the CM, IMA-Goa had stated that it has high regard for the alternate system of medicine under the AYUSH and that the same should be encouraged in its pure form. “It is unfortunate and detrimental to the fragile health system prevalent in our country which requires a robust system to meet the day to day requirement of the citizens. Instead the government decided to weaken the quality and training of healthcare workers,” the memorandum stated.
