Congress media cell convenor Trajano D’Mello on Friday demanded the government to disclose if it has made any arrangements to ensure a steady supply of beef in Goa in the light of Karnataka Assembly passing a bill banning the slaughter of cattle.
D’Mello pointed out that Goa received a major chunk of its beef supply from Karnataka and yet, in its strategy document, the state government has failed to make any mention of improving beef production within Goa even after spending crores of rupees on up-gradation of the meat complex.
“Beef is already scarce and the prices are shooting up of all commodities like fish, vegetables, cereals beyond the reach of the common man which is likely to push him to starvation. It will also highly impact the food industry serving beef which has found a big clientele among the tourists. The government has miserably failed to grant protection for the functioning of the meat complex,” the Congressman said.
He demanded that the state government should unveil a policy document to combat this scarcity.
“India is the second-largest exporter of beef in the world and if the BJP's policy is to ban slaughter of bulls and buffaloes the first thing they should do is ban export of beef. Is there a hidden agenda?” D’Mello questioned.
