PANAJI
Panaji MLA Babush Monserrate has dared former mayors of the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) Uday Madkaikar and Tony Rodriguez to contest the 2022 assembly elections on the Congress ticket against him in Panaji and his wife in Taleigao constituency.
"It does not matter who wishes to contest, but what matters is whom the people want to elect. It is the people's mandate which finally decides and let the people choose which candidate is better for them,” Monserrate told reporters.
He was reacting to plans by Madkaikar and Rodrigues to join the Congress and seek the party ticket to contest against Babush and his wife.
"Uday and Tony contesting elections will have no effect on me. Let them try their luck I wish them the best of luck", said Monserrate.
“This is democracy and everyone is free to contest elections from anywhere. I have no issue with anyone. If I had been elected unopposed and if someone wanted to contest against me, I would have said that is a little setback to me,” he said.
Monserrate said Madkaikar's decision to shifting sides would not have any effect on the CCP as his panel has the full mandate.
“It is part of politics. If they feel that they will grow independent and want to grow, I wish them all the best,” he added.
