Ward councillor Shraddha Amonkar on Friday evening carried out a joint inspection with Public Works Department (PWD) officials at Baina after several women complained of severe water shortage in the area ahead of Diwali.
During the inspection, PWD officials assured that the problem would be resolved by linking the existing old water pipeline to a new one. They also proposed installing a new pipeline as a permanent solution to the recurring issue.
Resident Suvarna Nayak said the problem had continued for over a year despite several complaints to the authorities. “We get water only around 3 am and have to stay awake all night to fill a few buckets because of the low pressure. Our family members take turns to collect water, and this has affected our health. We are frustrated, especially with Diwali coming, as we cannot manage without water,” Nayak said.
Councillor Amonkar said she had received several complaints from women in the locality and immediately called for an on-site inspection to understand the seriousness of the issue. “PWD officials have assured that immediate works will be taken up to improve water supply. I have also proposed laying a new pipeline to solve the problem permanently,” Amonkar said.
PWD officials explained that a shutdown at the Seraulim water reservoir had affected supply to Baina. “We will start improvement works by October 23 and connect the existing line to a new pipeline near Shafi Masjid to restore regular water flow. The current pipelines are decades old, so a new line has also been proposed as a long-term measure,” said a PWD official.
