The Additional Sessions Court at Panaji (in Ponda) will on Monday pronounce its verdict on the Crime Branch’s application to revoke the bail of Amit Palekar, one of the three accused in the Banastarim fatal accident case.

The CB alleged that Palekar – a lawyer and politician – violated his bail conditions by travelling abroad on four occasions, breaching the conditions laid down by the court when granting him bail last year.

During the second hearing on Friday, Palekar’s lawyer, Advocate Nitin Sardesai, argued that the allegations were politically motivated and stated that his client had previously criticised the police, which could be the reason for targeting him.

Sardesai further stated that Palekar obtained the necessary court permissions for his travels and that the bail order only required court approval for leaving India, without specifying countries.

“There was no violation of the bail conditions and when Palekar moved an application seeking permission for travel, the CB had not opposed it at the time,” he said.

The court has reserved its judgment for Monday.
