Residents of Bardez and parts of Bicholim talukas are set to face yet another restricted water supply on October 16 and 17 due to urgent maintenance work at the Assonora Water Treatment Plant, according to an announcement by the Public Works Department (PWD).

Vasuraj Karmalkar, Executive Engineer of the PWD water division, confirmed the planned disruption, stating that the water supply will be limited as necessary repairs and maintenance are carried out at the ageing facility.

“Due to urgent maintenance and repair work at the Assonora Water Treatment Plant, water supply to the entire Bardez Taluka and parts of Bicholim Taluka will be restricted on October 16 and 17,” Karmalkar said.

This notice comes on the heels of an abrupt disruption in water supply during the Dussehra celebrations on October 12, which left several parts of Bardez, including Mapusa, without water.

The disruption, caused by an electrical issue at the treatment plant, has sparked frustration among locals, who have voiced concerns over the frequent interruptions.

Residents have called for the government to overhaul the Assonora Water Treatment Plant, citing its age and repeated problems.

“The government needs to upgrade the entire plant. We are constantly facing water shortages due to these breakdowns,” said a Mapusa local.

Such notices of water supply disruption have become increasingly common in recent months, causing inconvenience to the general public.

The ongoing maintenance is seen as a short-term solution, but locals are urging long-term improvements to ensure consistent water supply in the future.
