The excise inspectors in Bardez formed two teams, with one inspector each moving around the length and breadth of the taluka requesting bar owners to honour the SC order.
“From morning, our team has been moving around requesting the owners of bars and liquor outlets to shut down their premises as per the SC guidelines,” said Ashok Goankar, excise inspector for Bardez.
He said the situation was extremely peaceful and no one objected to the instructions of the excise team. Gaonkar informed that 383 liquor outlets, which included bars, bars and restaurants, liquour vends and wholesalers, were identified within the 500 metres of national and state highways in Bardez.
“Until we get any further orders from the government, we will have to continue enforcing the court order.”
Bardez Bar and Restaurant Owners Association President Michael Carrasco said that all bar owners had voluntarily shut down their premises. “We had no alternative, as our excise licences were not renewed. Most of us shut down on our own,” Carrasco said.
Carrasco further informed that the association would wait to hear what measures CM Manohar Parrikar would take to mitigate the problem faced by the bar owners.
