Barge owners threaten to dump iron ore into sea

PONDA

The Barge Owners Association has threatened to dump mining ore into sea from their barges to save them from sinking and saving life of workers on board if exporters fail to unload it.

The BOA will on Monday write to exporters to lift ore from their barges failing which they will seek directions from the High Court. President of BOA Raymond D’sa on Sunday afternoon opened up intentions of barge owners as they are facing trouble due to suspension of transportation of minerals.

It may be recalled that in an interim order, the Bombay High Court had directed immediate suspension of transportation of minerals from the 88 mining leases, whose mining operations had been stopped by the Supreme Court last month.

Raymond D’sa addressing the meeting of mining dependent in Dharbandora said that there are 35 barges of owners affiliated to BOA, loaded with ore since last few days and the exporters have not taken any step to make them empty. Apart from this there are 25 more barges loaded with ore of other organisations and they too are waiting to get emptied.

“On Monday we will to write to the exporters and ask them to immediately unload the ore wherever they want. If they fail to act on our request, then on Wednesday we will approach the High Court to seek directions. If nothing happens then we will have no option other than dumping the ore into sea.” D’Sa said.
